Description

This new PNG Decaf is grown in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea in the Ivangoi, Purosa and Okapa valley. Over 3,000 farmers work this valley and a majority of the farmers grow their varieties in small gardens in tribal villages. Some of these coffee trees are over 25 years old, producing less cherries, but have a much higher sugar content than newer crops which means they are producing more sweet and complex cups.

The beans are pulped and dried in parchment then sent to Goroka where it is milled and prepared for export. When it arrives in the United States, it is sent to the Swiss Water headquarters in Vancouver to be decaffeinated.

I don't normally drink Decaf. I only got this bean for a Christmas party in the evening. It is really good! I took it just past first crack. You can really taste the caramel and chocolate, and great sweetness! Best Decaf I have drunk.

I was looking for a coffee variety with brightness to blend with a Kenyan caffeinated bean. That is what I like with my breakfast. I roasted this coffee to a city/city+ roast with about 50% of the beans at city and 50% at city+. It is a complex cup, the most complex of any decafs sold on this site that I have tried - fruity and somewhat spicy. The reviews on the caffeinated bean are nearly all 5 star ratings and I think that this bean is definitely more flavorful than the other decafs when roasted somewhat light. I was wondering if any of the beans were Jamaican Blue Mountain varieties or hybrids because some of the coffee in the Eastern Highlands are Jamaican Blue Mountain transplants and this coffee has that kind of complexity.
